Game of Thrones Season 5 has everyone buzzing with excitement once again about the nuances of adventure, betrayal and intrigue in this world and others. And now, with Minecraft more popular than ever, some may be wondering how they can turn their favorite map in Minecraft into a Game of Thrones style RPG sandbox. Well, I’m here to tell you that with the right game mods you can!
After doing some research, I came across a few epic additions that bring the world of Game of Thrones to life right in your Minecraft game. By combining the creative efforts of the team at WesterosCraft and a young modder named LeonardohJ4, you too can have this amazing world available at your fingertips.
The Map and Resource Pack
To dive into the world of Game of Thrones, it’s necessary to have a proper map of the universe. Thankfully the hard work has already been taken care of. A project called WesterosCraft has been in the works for three years and has provided a few maps available for download, allowing players an immersive experience in GRRM’s epic universe, be it Kings Landing, Winterfell, or The Dreadfort. I went ahead and downloaded the King’s Landing Map from their website and installed it into my Minecraft and I must say that at first glance I was . . . blown away. The city looks just like a pixelated version of the King’s Landing we love and dread from the TV Show and it is enormous. Luckily, I started the game in Creative Mode so I was able to fly around and give my full appreciation to the architecture that went into creating this map.
My first goal, of course, was to find The Red Keep and see how the creators of this map interpreted the home of the Lannisters. After some flying around and after allowing this very detailed map a minute to finish loading in my game browser, I was able to find the infamous castle myself and boy, does it look good. Not only is the exterior detailed exactly like it is in the show, but the interior is phenomenal as well. I spent a good 20 minutes exploring all the nooks and crannies of the castle, finding myself lost more than once. Of course, I really wanted to find the Iron Throne and I almost rejoiced out loud when I finally stumbled upon the Great Hall. Lo’ and behold, the Iron Throne was situated right at the head of the hall and like any true GOT fan, I couldn’t resist walking my Minecraft character right up to it. I even let him sit in it for a bit (Shhhh).
One noticeable thing about the more common buildings in these maps is that while the exterior looks amazing, many of them lack any sort of interior. This leaves plenty to do for the ambitious and completionist among us. So if you’re the creative-builder-type, you have the opportunity to really dig into some Westerosi interior design and truly customize your Game of Thrones Minecraft experience.
The Resource Pack
This map will work fine with the vanilla Minecraft default Resource Pack, but if you want to experience it the way the map creators intended, downloading the Resource Pack from their site is the way to go. This Resource Pack was created and customized by the team at WesterosCraft to pair perfectly with their maps. Plus, downloading this Resource Pack into your game is SUPER easy, giving you the ultimate view of your favorite locations in GRRM’s universe.
The Mod
But what if you want to take your Minecraft game to the next level, with characters, factions and weapons from the series itself? To truly experience Game of Thrones in Minecraft, one player has taken it a step further and has created the ultimate Game of Thrones mod for Minecraft.
Inspired by the now famous Lord of the Rings Mod, a player named LeonardohJ4 developed a similar mod using elements from Game of Thrones and it is epic! This mod includes characters and weapons from the universe, as well as dimensions (like Essos and Beyond the Wall) and biome-specific features. The best part is that he’s still rolling out more content to make it even better. I reached out to LeonardohJ4 and asked him how close he was to declaring the mod finished and his response was that “it’s impossible for it to be finished until the last two books come out, so it has a long way to go”.
I went ahead and downloaded this mod to my computer as well and was blown away by all the features.
Factions
There are over 15 joinable factions, including House Baratheon, House Lannister, House Stark and House Targaryen. Specific to certain biomes, these factions can only be joined if you’ve wandered far enough to encounter them in their homeland or any other biomes that are friendly to that faction. Finding the Faction isn’t enough, however, as players will have to craft Faction Join Papers to be accepted as one of the Faction’s own, making it a more challenging aspect of the mod.
Mobs
Besides Factions, there are over 60 mobs specific to the mod as well. After sifting through some of the new characters in creative mode, I was amazed to find that this mod includes such character-types as Unsullied Soldiers, Children of the Forest and Faceless Men, as well as more well-known character-types like men of the Knights Watch, Dothraki, and Wildlings. The mod even includes mobs such as Direwolves, Giants and Mammoths, all of which are enormous!
Weapons and Armor
Avid Fans of the series may recognize some of the weapons and armor added to this mod as well. Depending on the Faction you choose to join, different armor sets become available for you to request. Iconic swords such as Ice, Needle, and Oathbreaker have also been included in the mod, so fans of the series can get into character and explore the known world as their favorite scheming, backstabbing, throne-chaser.
Putting It All Together
Setting up the map, resource pack, and mod on your computer might seem like a daunting task but if you’re up for it, it should only take about 10 minutes. To make your life a little easier, I wrote up a quick How-To Guide to get you started adding these features to your own game.
Installing the Mod
The first thing you need to do to play this mod is to install Minecraft Forge. However, note that you won’t be able to run Minecraft Forge for Minecraft version 1.8, so in order to run Forge, you will first need to change the version of Minecraft you’re running to 1.6.4 by opening the Minecraft app on your computer, clicking Edit Profile, and then selecting 1.6.4 from the Versions menu. Once this is done click Play to commit these changes.
Also, because this mod doesn’t work on the latest version of Forge, you will need to make sure that you download Forge 9.1.1 for Minecraft 1.6.4. This will ensure that the mod works correctly after you’ve installed it to your computer. To install, just click on the “Install Client” radio button and hit OK to download the appropriate libraries.
Next, it’s important to open the Minecraft app on your computer once again and change your profile to “Forge” and then hit “Play.” You will notice that there is now a “Mods” option on the menu screen. Close out Minecraft once again and move on to the next step.
Once Forge is completely installed, install the latest Minecraft A Song of Ice and Fire Mod on your computer. Depending on whether you’re using a Mac or a PC, the file format should be either a .jar or a .zip file.
Then, if you’re on a Windows computer, open the Minecraft folder by clicking the Start Menu, open Run, then type: %appdata%.minecraft and click Run.
The elder scrolls arena download. If you’re using a Mac computer, open Finder and click on the “Go” button located on the top menu bar. From there click, “Go to Folder” and type in ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft.
Once you’ve located the correct folder, navigate to the “Mods” folder and drag and drop the new Minecraft mod folder (with a .zip or .jar extension) into this folder and you’ll be all set! Just run Minecraft once again and click on that new “Mods” button and be sure to select the Game of Thrones Mod.
The mod should now be installed on your computer. However, if you want a map of the world you will still need to install the Game of Thrones map from the WesterosCraft website. You’ll have the choice of downloading either Kings Landing, The Dreadfort, or Winterfell on their site.
Installing the Map
To install the custom map after its downloaded from the WesterosCraft site, you’ll need to extract the RAR files with a tool like 7-Zip (if you’re on PC) or Rar Extractor (if you’re using a Mac). Once this is done you’ll have a folder that you can now drag into the Minecraft Saves folder. This folder is also located in the Minecraft folder that I’ve explained how to get to in the section above. After this is done, you should have no problem loading the map in Minecraft and playing Game of Thrones!
Installing the Resource Pack
Lastly, to complete the Game of Thrones Minecraft experience, you’ll want to download the Game of Thrones Resource Pack from WesterosCraft. Once it’s downloaded, just open Minecraft, hit Play and click on Options. Following this, press the Resource Packs button and then “Open the resource pack folder”. Lastly, just drag and drop the Resource Pack that you want into the folder and you should be able to select it from the Resource Packs menu right away.

Posted on April 22, 2013, CJ Miozzi Five Game of Thrones Mods You Must Play
A Game of Thrones has become a cultural phenomenon, a new generation’s The Lord of the Rings. Ten years ago, it was Tolkien’s works that formed the basis of just about every fantasy-themed mod you could get your hands on, but today’s gamer is enthralled with the politics of Martin’s oeuvre.
If you’re a fan of the book series A Song of Ice and Fire or the HBO TV series A Game of Thrones, here are five mods you must play. If you don’t own the base game, they may even be worth buying the game just to play.
5. Crusader Kings II: A Game of Thrones
This total-conversion includes custom heraldry and new gameplay features designed to fit the world of A Song of Ice and Fire. Players can choose to play from any start date from sixteen years prior to the events of book one to the beginning of book two.
Traditional gameplay is replaced with players instead fighting to control just one throne – the Iron Throne. Events from CK2 have been adapted to fit the lore and flavor of A Song of Ice and Fire.
New features include a dueling engine that allows lords to fight each other in one-on-one combat, a new way for characters to interact, and pets that aid in battle.
While RPG elements are included, the mod isn’t a full narrative recreation of the books. Players have the freedom to explore “What If?” scenarios: What if Robb captured King’s Landing? What if Stannis and Renly joined forces against Joffrey? What if Rhaegar Targaryen had killed Robert on the Trident instead of the other way around? All these things can, and may, happen in the mod, with or without the player’s choice. No game will ever be the same, whether you win or you die.

4. Mount & Blade: Warband: A Clash of Kings
Currently in beta, this mod takes place during the second book in the series and features eighteen unique factions, each with their own troops, distinct cultures and custom settlements, as well as a “secret” emerging faction.
Encompassing all of Westeros and the western part of Essos, the map for “A Clash of Kings” might well be the most detailed map ever made for a Mount and Blade: Warband mod.
“A Clash of Kings” contains more than 1600 new items and many new features, such as naval travel and battles, custom settlements for many iconic locations, such as King’s Landing, Winterfell, Moat Cailin, Storm’s End and Highgarden, new companions, new music and visuals, an invading faction, many custom units, a new way of recruitment, and new heraldic items.

3. Skyrim: Game Of Thrones Adaptation Mod For Skyrim v3
Here’s a mod that transforms Skyrim into Westeros. All written dialogue in the game has been reworked to fit the setting, and new storylines have been created, such as House Tyrell balancing the pros and cons of an alliance with Casterly Rock and the Lannisters’ attempting to turn the smallfolk against the Northern rebels through religion.
Of course, new locations are included, such as the fortress island of Dragonstone, ancestral home to House Targaryen. You can even sit the Iron Throne itself!
New followers will join players on their quests, from Daenerys’ bloodriders to the Reed siblings to Salladhor Saan the pirate mercenary.
As can be expected, the mod comes with new armors, outfits and weapons. Beyond that, it replaces all NPCs with humans — though there are themes in the replacements. Most Orcs have become Dothraki savages, clustered together in hidden khalasars, while the Khahjit caravans now represent traders from the Free City of Lorath.

2. Medieval II: Total War: Kingdoms: Westeros: Total War
This mod includes unit reskins, new units, custom models, and a map that encompasses the continent of Westeros. The playable factions, which each have their own unique units, are Houses Stark, Tully, Lannister, Greyjoy, Arryn, Martell, Tyrell, Frey, Baratheon of Storm’s End (Renly), Baratheon of Dragonstone (Stannis) and Baratheon of King’s Landing (Joffrey).
The game begins during the events of the first novel, at the onset of the War of Five Kings.

1. Minecraft: WesterosCraft
Quite simply, this is Westeros masterfully recreated in Minecraft. I can wax poetic about it, but this video will do more to convince you to download these maps than any number of words can:

Well, I finally had success the next day, getting back to being able to view our regular cable programming channels. So I did a factory reset listed in an earlier post.

Season 7 of Game Of Thrones is in full swing, and all the pieces are in place for Daenerys and Jon to finally destroy the Night King and return the hallowed tradition of brother/sister marriages to Westeros.
While Telltale won't be returning to A Song Of Ice And Fire for some time, there's still plenty of scheming for the Iron Throne you can undertake on the gaming front.
While we wait for Jorah to find a cure to greyscale and for that evil little brat Bran Stark to travel through time and drive Aerys Targaryen mad with his whispers about burning White Walkers, why not try out some of these killer Game Of Thrones mods?
Skyrim
These follower presets painstakingly recreate the faces and clothing of famous characters like Ser Davos Seaworth, Eddard Stark, and many more.
Forget about the vanilla followers and instead have the evil Ramsay Bolton follow you around on a Skyrim-wide killing spree (note that several of these require extra texture mods to get the presets looking picture perfect).
There are a ton of Game Of Thrones mods for Bethesda's aging action RPG beyond these -- find our full list of the10 best Game Of Thrones mods for Skyrim right here.
Civilization 6
There are already countless hours of creating wonders, waging wars, and engaging in diplomacy with historical figures in Sid Meier's Civilization 6, but you can take that a step further by bringing in the ruthless politics of Westeros.
A Civ Of Ice And Fire replaces the various civilization leaders with characters like Euron Greyjoy and Olenna Tyrell, swaps out city names, and replaces all the various traits and abilities with more Game Of Thrones-appropriate entries.
This one's not quite as in-depth as the previous A Mod Of Ice And Fire, however, so if you've got Civ 5, be sure to try that one as well.
Atilla: Total War
The Total War series is amazingly ripe for anything war-themed on the mod front, and franchises once relegated only to modding have actually hit the main series eventually (looking at you Warhammer).
This one is a total conversion mod for Atilla: Total War that completely changes the armies, facial textures, maps, and locations to bring the wars of Westeros to your PC.
New specific scenarios are now also being made along with the total conversion, letting you replay the epic Battle Of The Bastards (hands down the best war scene so far, although hopefully, it will be outdone in GoT seasons 7 or 8), with more specific battles to come.
Medieval II: Total War Kingdoms
It shouldn't be any surprise that there are more Total War entries with in-depth Game Of Thrones mods. This one offers a very different perspective than the other mods, however, as it takes place in GoT's deep past, before the Seven Kingdoms were carved out.
Instead, you forge a house of your own as a petty king duking it out with the Andals long before Aegon the Conqueror came and unified the continent.
Mount & Blade Warband
Much like the Total War series, anything in the Mount & Blade franchise is just begging to be modded to represent Westeros or the lands beyond the Narrow Sea.
There a ton of Warband mods that bring in various elements of A Song Of Ice And Fire, but easily among the most ambitious is A Clash Of Kings, which sets you as a nobody-peasant on the road to greatness in any of the clashing Westerosi armies.
Join up with Robert's Rebellion, conquer Harrenhal, mix it up with Stannis Baratheon, or do anything else you'd like while roaming the Seven Kingdoms. Recent updates have fixed some issues like a lack of diplomacy, so if you heard negative things about the mod in the past, give it a try now.
Also worth checking out is A World Of Ice And Fire, which has you starting your own great house and duking it out for control of the Iron Throne.
Age Of Empires II
When it comes to classic RTS games, Age Of Empires II is still a hallowed entry well worth replaying. Add in Steam Workshop content though, and you might never try a modern strategy title ever again.
One of the best is the Diplomacy Overhaul mod, which drastically changes the direction of the game, shifting away from combat into politicking and backstabbing in true GoT style. Be sure to play this one on multiplayer, though, as the game's base AI doesn't handle the changes well.
If you prefer something more along the lines of the classic Age Of Empires II experience, go with the War Of The Five Kings mod or the Game Of Thrones Map mod instead.
Crusader Kings: Deus Vult
This conversion mod for Crusader Kings offers up two different main scenarios, one in the past where Robert rebels against the Mad King, and one in the near future, where winter has finally arrived and the undead are sweeping through the South. Letting you play through generations of great Westerosi houses with lore-friendly additions, this is a killer mod for the sadly aging Crusader Kings.
If you're more into the sequel, Crusader Kings II, the full conversion Game Of Thrones mod adds in elements like personal honor combat between lords and scripted events based around the story from the book series -- but letting you deviate from the cannon outcomes.
Ark: Survival Evolved
More a novelty than a total conversion like many of the previous entries, this mod adds in some fun Game Of Thrones trappings to Ark: Survival Evolved while you tame dinos and build settlements.
Want an iron throne in the middle of your town? Have at it! Want to run around in House Lannister armor or wield a Dothraki arakh blade? No problem, just pull up the engrams and get crafting!
Minecraft
Was it even a question? Of course, Minecraft has a ton of skins bringing in various A Song Of Ice And Fire characters, but this mod goes above and beyond, bringing in various great houses and recreating areas like King's Landing. Sadly, the mod is no longer being worked on, but it still exists for download by Minecraft fanatics.
With these 9 Game Of Thrones mods, you've got endless opportunities to learn the age-old adage of Valar Morghulis ('all men must die') in RTSs, RPGs, and even open world crafting games! From total conversions to small add-ons, these mods will definitely get you in the mood for the treachery and action that's sure to define Game of Thrones Season 7.

I mentioned in my review of Crusader Kings II a few years back that the systems put in place by developers Paradox seemed ideally suited to George R R Martin’s fantasy universe. While there are larger things going on like Kingdoms falling and wars being fought, CKII places just as much importance on the more personal side of feudal rule: marriage, politics, alliances and back-stabbing. Which just so happens to b the same blending of the big and small picture that that makes GoT that much more appealing to a wider audience than your standard fantasy tale.

So it was only a matter of time before the two were brought together. A Game Of Thrones is a total conversion mod for Crusader Kings II that replaces the game’s map, factions, characters and even some systems with those of George R R Martin’s fantasy universe.
Beginning at various points in the history of Westeros (players can choose from a few key starting points), CKII:GoT lets you play as any title-holder in Westeros. And I do mean any. The mod team has certainly done their research, as going beyond the big names like Aerys, Robert and Ned Stark are hundreds of lesser lords and officials, some featuring as characters in the books/TV show, others only mentioned briefly or in passing.
What does this mean? Everything I said about the main game in my review applies here, only everything I loved about CKII is now magnified, because I’m not playing as some random English Duke, I can play as Ned Stark. Walder Frey is there, and he has 100 kids, and they can all be married off to unsuspecting husbands/wives/victims. Even The Wall and the Night’s Watch are there.

Originally released in 2012, and covering only the land of Westeros itself, the mod has since grown to include all the auxiliary information contained in the World of Ice & Fire guide books, and more impressively it also now includes Essos as well. There are scenarios (basically custom starting points) to kick off from as well, ranging from the forging of the Seven Kingdoms themselves through to the events of A Feast For Crows.
Honestly, it’s worth a download just to use it as an interactive Game of Thrones encyclopaedia, clicking through the family trees and lineages and histories not only learning about the world, but admiring the amount of work that’s gone into this mod.
In terms of what it adds or changes to the vanilla CKII, there’s nothing too different. There’s a new war system in place to better handle the nature of the conflict (since it’s one giant civil conflict), a new assassination system and the incorporation of knights into the character system. Aside from that, and some welcome (and extensive) re-skinning of CKII’s graphics, things play mostly the same as they do in the standard game. Some added, extra events - winter is coming, prisoners demanding trial by combat - are a nice touch.
Why Crusader Kings II Should Be Game Of The YearGame Of Thrones Minecraft World
It's easy. Because it's the only game on this list that's about sex and politics.

If you’re a strategy game veteran, you’ll have no problems picking this up and enjoying it. Those who are big GoT fans but who haven’t played a game like Crusader Kings II, though, don’t panic; it may look complex, but it’s surprisingly easy to get a handle on, and you can have enjoyable games only knowing the very basics of its structure. Later playthroughs, where you can dig a little deeper, will only get better.
To help you out getting started, here’s a great tutorial video made by Rojiru:
You can download the mod here. Note that, being a mod, you’ll need a copy of Crusader Kings II first, which you can get here.
